My Mind's Eye
Description
She sees things in colour.
We see things in black and white.
She sees the beauty in much of everything.
We see nothing but neglect and abandonment.
She sees the things those around her mean to hide.
We see nothing and are deaf and dumb.
She sees.
We don't.
That is the difference.
But what happens when she is rudely into our world?
When she becomes just like us?
Foreword
The video was old. The quality was bad and it was filled with static in places, spastic lines in others. But it did nothing to detract from the bell-chime laugh of the girl in the video.
She laughed as she ran, screaming in excitement as the person holding the camcorder chased her around the yard.
"Princess! Slow down! You're going to hurt yourself!" the man behind the camcorder called.
"Haha! Daddy! I'm a big girl now! I won't fall and hurt myself anymore!" the girl laughed as she picked her up pace and ran even faster around the homemade treehouse.
"Big girl eh? So what do you wanna be when you grow up princess?" the father asked, chuckling at his daughter's enthusiasm. Deep in his heart, he prayed what she had said would come to pass. A solemn, earnest prayer from a loving father for his beloved little girl.
"A BALLERINA!!!" the girl screamed without even thinking.
"Why a ballerina princess?"
"Because ballerinas are pretty and beautiful and I wanna share that beauty with everyone!"
"I'm sure you will do that in whatever you do princess."
"Me too daddy!"
"Com'ere! Give daddy a big bear hug!"
"WAHHH!!!!! I love you daddy!"
"I love you too princess."
And that was where the video ended.
The woman laughed and picked up the phone to call someone.
Her fingers fumbled silghtly.
It had been a while.
A few rings later, a man with a deep comforting baritone voice picked up the call.
"Hey daddy."
"Princess! What brings you to call?"
"I just missed you is all."
"Awww...well you know your mom and I are just a few hours drive away. If you didn't work yourself so hard you should come by more often."
"I'll try daddy. I'll call again soon ok?"
"Sure thing princess..."
"Something you wanna say to me dad?"
"Yea...just...keep showing the beauty you see to the world baby. I love you and I'm so proud of you. You know that right?"
"I know you do daddy. And I won't stop. Life is too beautiful to be seen otherwise."
"Amen to that!"
"Haha bye daddy."
"Bye princess."
